Partec developed the key technique in 1968: flow cytometry (FCM). This is an automated process, which allows cells and particles to be analysed rapidly. The cells to be analysed are marked using DNA or immune markers and fluoresecence dyes. Subsequently, they pass through up to five laser sources in the flow cytometer. When they are stimulated by the laser, aditionally to scatter light the marked cells emit fluorescent light which is detected and amplified by optoelectronic components. The subsequent evaluation is performed on a computer, with the results measured for each cell being registered. Flow Cytometry allows for up to 16 different cell properties to be tested for at the same time - in more than 100,000 cell per minute.
The flow cytometry devices can be used in a wide range of applications in healthcare and medical diagnostics (e.g. Immunology, leukemia, lymphoma, HIV/AIDS), cell biology, microbiology, biotechnology, agroscience, plant bredding, aquaculture, and for quality control in pharmaceutical industry as well as in food and beverage industries.
