Wastewater treatment requires many different steps, at the end of which, harmless water is returned to the cycle. Microorganisms are relevant in various ways. In biological treatment, they are used as a complex ecosystem. This microbial ecosystem breaks down organic and inorganic pollutants for environmentally sound purified water.

Potentially pathogenic microorganisms in wastewater, on the other hand, pose an environmental risk; disinfection measures during treatment eliminate them. Knowledge of the exact number of all bacteria/microorganisms and their viability is important for the effective control of process steps. Only with this knowledge can the processes be controlled, monitored and ultimately optimized – for resource-saving and safe wastewater treatment.
