Real-time monitoring for sustainable and safe breeding

Aquaculture has developed into a significant sector of global food production in recent decades. As this industry grows, so do the demands on monitoring and ensuring water quality, as well as the health and productivity of the farmed organisms. An innovative method that is becoming increasingly important in two respects is the flow cytometric solution from Sysmex Partec.

On the one hand, the technology offers the possibility of monitoring water quality, one of the crucial factors for the growth, health and survival of the farmed organisms, quickly and safely. On the other hand, flow cytometry enables rapid and precise analysis of the DNA content of individual organisms. This makes it easy to determine the ploidy level of the farmed organisms. Knowledge of changes in the natural ploidy level is important for the breeding and productivity of sterile and vigorous animals.

Challenges in aquaculture

Common challenges:
  • Monitoring water quality, including in real time
    Nutrient inputs, biofilm formation or stagnant water are stressors for fish or crustaceans that need to be identified early in order to initiate countermeasures.
  • Control of disinfection measures
    In closed recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), water disinfection is a central component of hygiene. An evaluation of the disinfection effect helps to optimize the efficiency of the measures in order to avoid over- or under-dosing with disinfectants.
  • Early detection of disease outbreaks
    A sudden increase in bacterial populations can indicate an impending disease. The Sysmex Partec solution can detect such changes quickly and reliably even before clinical symptoms appear in the animals.
  • Optimization of feeding strategies
    The composition of the microbial community in the water is strongly influenced by the nutrient supply. Measurement with CyStain™ BacCount helps to assess the effects of different feeds on water quality. A high proportion of so-called HNA bacteria, for example, indicates an oversupply of organic material, which can lead to oxygen deficiency and disease risks.
  • Production of triploid individuals
    Control of triploidization to increase meat quality, yield and avoid genetic mixing with wild populations.
  • Production of hybrid lines and control of hybridization
